Ocean Advocate
The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth, and it plays a vital role in regulating the climate and supporting life on the planet. It absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, produces oxygen, and moderates global temperatures. However, climate change is having a devastating impact on the ocean, and ocean advocates are working to protect this precious resource.
The ocean is absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases. This warming is causing sea levels to rise, glaciers and ice sheets to melt, and ocean currents to change. The ocean is also becoming more acidic as it absorbs more carbon dioxide.
These changes are having a significant impact on marine ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. Sea level rise is inundating coastal communities and displacing millions of people. Warming waters are disrupting fish migration patterns and making it more difficult for fish to survive. Ocean acidification is making it harder for shellfish and other marine life to build their shells.
The Role of Ocean Advocacy
Ocean advocates are working to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on the ocean and to promote policies that will protect this vital resource. They are also working to educate the public about the importance of the ocean and the ways in which we can all help to protect it.
Ocean advocacy takes many forms. Some advocates work to influence government policy, while others focus on educating the public or supporting grassroots organizations. There are also many ocean advocacy organizations that work on a range of issues, including climate change, pollution, and overfishing.
Ocean advocates are playing a critical role in the fight against climate change. They are raising awareness of the impacts of climate change on the ocean and promoting policies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect marine ecosystems.
One of the most important things that ocean advocates are doing is raising awareness of the importance of the ocean in the climate system. The ocean is often overlooked in climate discussions, but it plays a vital role in regulating the climate and supporting life on the planet.
Ocean advocates are also working to promote policies that will protect the ocean from the impacts of climate change. This includes policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to establish marine protected areas, and to support sustainable fisheries management.
How to Get Involved in Ocean Advocacy
There are many ways to get involved in ocean advocacy. Here are a few ideas:
Learn about the ocean and climate change. The first step to getting involved in ocean advocacy is to learn about the ocean and the impacts of climate change on this vital resource. There are many resources available online and in libraries.
Support ocean advocacy organizations. There are many ocean advocacy organizations that are working to protect the ocean from the impacts of climate change. You can support these organizations by donating money, volunteering your time, or spreading the word about their work.
Contact your elected officials. You can contact your elected officials and let them know that you support policies to protect the ocean from climate change. You can also ask them to support funding for ocean research and conservation programs.
Reduce your own carbon footprint. One of the best ways to protect the ocean from climate change is to reduce your own carbon footprint. This means making changes to your lifestyle, such as driving less, eating less meat, and using less energy in your home.
Here are a few examples of ocean advocacy organizations that are working to protect the ocean from climate change:
- Ocean Conservancy
- World Wildlife Fund
- Surfrider Foundation
- Greenpeace
- Natural Resources Defense Council
- Oceana
- Environmental Defense Fund
- Union of Concerned Scientists
- Conservation International
- Pew Charitable Trusts
- Blue Nature Alliance
- Climate Reality Project

Andi Cross: Expedition Lead for Edges of the Earth
In a recent interview on the podcast “The Caring Economy,” we sat down with a great ocean advocate, Andi Cross, of Edges of the Earth, to discuss the way forward on ocean advocacy.
Cross, a seasoned marketing, and brand strategist with a passion for the ocean, had spent the last 15 years building and evolving businesses that fuel the future. But something was missing. She wanted to do something more meaningful, something that would make a real difference in the world.
One day, while on a solo dive trip to Fiji, Andi experienced the magic of the underwater world firsthand. She was struck by the beauty and fragility of the marine ecosystem, and she met incredible people working tirelessly to conserve our oceans. But their stories were largely untold.
That’s when the idea for Edges of the Earth was born. Cross wanted to create a platform to share the voices of these unsung heroes and inspire others to act. She also wanted to show the unfiltered side of conservation work, both the challenges and the triumphs.
She assembled a team of experienced filmmakers and storytellers, and they set out on a two-year expedition to 50 remote and under-explored dive destinations across the globe. They visited the Galápagos Islands, Raja Ampat, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Weddell Sea, and they met with scientists, activists, and community leaders working to protect our oceans.
Along the way, Cross and her team have been capturing stunning footage of marine life and the diverse landscapes of the ocean. They also documented the important work that conservationists are doing to protect our planet.
One of the most memorable stories Cross encountered was that of a community in Indonesia that was fighting to protect their coral reefs from overfishing and pollution.
The community had established a marine protected area, and they were working to educate and empower local people to become stewards of the ocean.
Cross’s team also met with scientists who were studying the impacts of climate change on the ocean. They learned about the dangers of ocean acidification, sea level rise, and warming waters. But they also learned about the resilience of the ocean and the hope that exists for the future.
Cross’s work with Edges of the Earth is helping to raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and inspired people to act. She has shown the world that there is hope for our oceans, and that we all have a role to play in protecting them.
Cross continues her work with Edges of the Earth, sharing stories of ocean conservation and inspiring others to act. She also works as a consultant, helping businesses and organizations to become more sustainable and socially responsible.
Cross is a passionate advocate for the ocean, and she is determined to make a difference. She believes that by working together, we can create a better future for our planet and for all its inhabitants.
As with all guests on The Caring Economy, Andi Crossof Edges of the Earth how leaders with purpose-driven lives and careers are shaping our contemporary lives for the better.
